Meet The Flock…

This is Peter…
Peter is a girl…
She is an Easter Egger…
I picked her because she is suppose to lay blue or green eggs
or if I’m really lucky… pink eggs
And also… because quite frankly… when she grows up…
she will be one strange looking bird…
But for the time being… I am enjoying the fact that she looks like a chipmunk

This is White Fatty…
When she grows up she will be white… and VERY FAT…
If you look closely at her feet you will see that they are covered in feathers…
So far… White Fatty is our favorite… she loves to be held…

This is Buff…
Short for Buff Orpington…
According to mypetchicken.com :Orpington–a pretty, bright, pale “buffed” copper color that is as
striking as eye candy on a green lawn.I don’t know about you… but when I try and describe the color my chickens I often use the phrase “eye candy”…This goofy little birds favorite time of the day is nap time…
which for her is like every 10 minutes…
Monkey Boy picked out this bird because
#1 It’s suppose to be a well behaved bird
#2 Buff sounds like a guys name… even though this peep is a girl…
…we hope

This is Black Fatty…
another one of the Girl Who Thinks Shes a Bird..birds
Like White Fatty… this bird is suppose to get nice and plump as well… only she will be black… with no feathers on her sweet little feet…
This was the very first bird we picked out…
If you click above you will see why we chose her…
She is a beauty…
Her clan in form Australia… (Hi Naomi)

This is Cuckoo…
and… the name is VERY fitting.
This little bird is crazy… non stop thrill a minute always pecking at something…
or scratching… or playing in the water…
If ever a bird could have ADHD… it would be this one…
I’m excited to see what kind of a chicken she grows into…

If you are in the market for some pet chickens…
I highly recommend mypetchicken.com
They will let you order as few as 3 birds… all different if you’d like…
When I first started researching baby chicks I had a few requirements that needed to be met.#1 ALL GIRLS… No Boys… Roosters need not apply…#2 It took me almost a year to talk the handsome husband into baby chicks…
(originally I asked for 100 birds)… A word of advise: ALWAYS AIM HIGH… this way when your handsome husband finally comes around and says “How about just a few”… You still win…
Hey… 5 is better than nothing if you ask me.

My favorite part about being a chicken momma so far?
Peeking in the box and seeing them all flat on their sweet little bellies taking a siesta…

Life is good.

A Peep Show…

The post office called about 10am this morning…
“Please come quick… your package is chirping”…
So I called my assistant…
who happened to be home from pre-school today…
and asked if she wanted to go to the post office with me
to pick up some baby chicks…
…and she did…

And waiting inside were 5 day old chicks…
1 for me, 1 for Monkey Boy and 3 for the girl who thinks she’s a bird…

This is my chick…
her name is Peter… as in Peter Rabbit…
I named her Peter because she is an Easter Egger
and because her face will look like a rabbit when she gets bigger…
And because I think all rabbits should be named Peter… whether they are a boy or a girl…

My lovely assistant took each and every chick out of their shipping box and dipped their little beaks into the water for a wee drink…
and then she dipped their beaks into the feed dish…

We have baby chicks…
Wooo Hooo…

Hello Spring…

Hello Spring…

Spring has arrived… I think I read the weather is suppose to be in the mid 60’s this week…

the radishes are sprouting…

and the peas are growing fast…

The strawberries are coming back to life…

and look… my second batch of peas is starting to sprout…

The chives are also appearing…
and I think it might be time to plant out the kale and Walla Walla onions this week…

I have some VERY EXCITING news to share with you on the
“pet chicken” situation…
but you’ll have to wait another day or two…

Do you grow Shasta Daisy’s? I HEART them…
I don’t like to cut them… just look at them…
Some things are better seen in nature… and daisy’s are one of them.

The rhubarb plants I bought last year from the Farmer’s Market are looking good… they were looking even better before the chickens decided to snack on them…

The raspberry Jungle is looking nice…
I hope I have enough this year to make 1 batch of jam…
…and maybe some to freeze…

Does this pear branch look like a chicken foot to you?
I think it’s kinda creepy…

The blueberries are back in business…
Last year I planted 12 (I think) bushes…
the chickens LOVE blueberries…
and so do we…

Speaking of chickens…
I have come up with a new job for them…
Since their job of fertilizing the garden boxes is finished for the season…
I have enlisted them as official weed pullers…
or weed eaters…
Basically I move the Eglu around to a new spot every few days (that has weeds) and they peck away… looking for bugs… and of course eating the weeds too…
It’s pure genius if you ask me.

There is a cereal sale going on at Albertson’s…
Would you like some free cereal?
Do you know anyone who would like some free cereal?
Would you like to donate some free cereal to your local food bank?
Well… if you live in the Pacific Northwest… and have an Albertson’s nearby…
Here is how to pick up some free cereal…

Step 1 Put 6 boxes of “sale” cereal in your cart…

Step 2 When the lovely cashier who knows you by name smiles and asks if you have any coupons… hand over the 3 coupons that you clipped from the Sunday paper…

Step 3 Then hand her your double coupons…

Then hand her $3.54 …

Then she will hand you back a “coupon” for $4.00 off your next order.

Smile and say Thank you…

Put cereal in your car.

******

Then go back into the store…

And put 6 boxes of cereal in your cart…

Hand over 3 more coupons…

And then 3 more double coupons…

Your total will be $3.54…

And you will want to use this $4 off coupon…
But if you pay with the $4 coupon… the cashier will owe you .46 cents…
and FYI… she will not give you money…
So you will need a “filler item” … like a .50 cent yogurt

So now… your total for the 6 boxes of cereal and 1 yogurt will be $4.04 cents.

Hand the cashier the $4 off coupon and .04 cents

You just picked up 6 boxes of cereal and 1 yogurt for .04 cents…

And lucky you… she will hand you yet another $4 off your next order coupon…

Which means… you can do this deal over and over and over again… until you run out of coupons… or room in your car… or until you end up in jail because they threw you out of the store and when the cops showed up they put you on a 72 hour hold in the psych ward for having 86 boxes of cereal in your possession.

*****

Can anyone say Holy Crap that’s a lot of free cereal?

Remember to check your dates!

Lost In translation

I brought some free discarded bok choy home from the grocery today for my chickens… when I asked the produce guy if I could have the bok choy scraps to take home for free… he had a strange look on his face… like “Sure lady… if you’re hungry go ahead and take it”… I didn’t think twice about it until I got home… it never occurred to me to explain to my new boyfriend in the produce section who hands out perfectly edible vegetables that I was going to feed it to my chickens…

I told the handsome husband about my new boyfriend in the produce section who gives me vegetable scraps…and you want to know what he said? I’ll give you one guess…

He said ” I can’t believe they haven’t thrown you out of there yet”

Now… if that doesn’t sound supportive… I don’t know what does…

Hmmm

Oh… I almost forgot… I found 6 cents on the ground today…
Wooo Hooo!
