Here’s the cast of characters for tonight’s canning session……center stage is a beautiful assortment of prize winning homegrown heirloom (ya so I awarded the prizes myself) tomatoes.
Before going into the blender…..

Umm let’s just say that YES…..an immersion blender will be on my Christmas list this year……

Ahhhh……. all finished.
I ended up with 5 1/2 quarts of yummy tomato/basil soup….and let’s just say that YES,

Here I am pulling up the last of the 1st planting of bush beans…the first planting yielded about 50lbs of beans….I have no idea what I was thinking when I planted a second batch…..at this rate we will be eating green beans with every single meal thru winter/fall/next spring…..anyone have any good recipes?
I am picking about 5lbs of blackberries every 3rd day and freezing them for winter pies….
The monkeys are back from camp……I asked the little monkey man how come he only had 2 pair of dirty socks in his laundry bag ( I packed 7)…he said “Well…one pair got really wet and so I had to put on a clean pair”….this is a slight improvement over last year…..last year he wore 1 pair of socks for the entire week…..Hey…at least he brushed his teeth….I think.
I harvested a pitiful 5lbs of Australian Crescent potatoes from a patch that only got watered twice this season…..next year I plan on planting the potatoes closer to the house.
I discovered 2 little acorn squash growing in the corn patch…..yippee…..

More peaches…..10 pints peaches…7 pints peach butter…..yummm!

Mavis and the food strainer make sauce….

What can I say…. I love amazon.com wish lists…..my MIL bought the B2B Food Strainer & Sauce Maker for me last Christmas….how did she know I wanted one? I made a list…..and she bought it….
how easy is that?
You would think that when you plant 63 tomato plants you would have more than 10lbs of ripe tomatoes sitting around waiting to be made into sauce……but I live in Seattle…..so that should explain everything…..next year if I want to follow any sort of canning recipe that calls for 30lbs ripe tomatoes I will have to plant more…like 200 plants…..and I’m not sure I have that in me…..so I had to make my sauce in the crock pot…..boo hoo….
So here we go…..now if you own one of these contraptions (ohhh that doesn’t sound good) you would probably notice that plastic white thing is not positioned properly…but this being my first go at it…I don’t know (okay I actually didn’t the read manual…I just looked at the pictures)see that big orange bowl…that’s suppose to collect all the tomato peels and cores…..
So I chopped my tomatoes up…..not boiled…(I did read that part) and put them in the hopper….then I tried to stuff them down the little hopper with this red plastic thing…..
Ahhh look…we are off to a great start…I see sauce….
It probably should have been a red flag that there were no tomato peels/cores coming out…..but because I am mechanically deficient I didn’t notice….
Not until around this half way point did I realize that I must of put something together wrong (actually I forgot to put the white rubber washer thing in)….around this time my counter top / bar stools (and anything within 5 feet) was covered with juicy pulp…seeds and tomato goo….
The couch is 10 feet away and it got sprayed as well…..
So here is my pan full of tomato puree….you can clearly see that the little strainer thing is jammed with the tomato peels…..this may be a sign that I should not become a rocket scientist…cause if the lady who’s hiring over at NASA were to read my blog….she’d think I was an idiot….What???? Did I hear an objection??? Oh you’re so kind….
The floor had a bunch of black oil spots because apparently I used a little too much oil when I put the thing together….I mean really….How am I suppose to know how much a “small amount of oil” is? What do I look like? A mechanic?

Oh well….the three hours were not a complete loss….. in the end I still made a crock pot full of sauce….from homegrown tomatoes….and basil, and oregano and a few homegrown onions as well…
